by Kim Louise Glidden

Armstrong Grant Committee members, Daisy Kates and Penne Roberts, presented information on three 2018 funding applications to NMPCA board members on May 18.  Total funding of $1,500 was awarded and equally divided amongst Potter’s Guild of Las Cruces, Desert Academy located in Santa Fe, and El Rito Arts Association.

At the end of May, six members of Potter’s Guild of Las Cruces will be traveling to China to study history and culture with an emphasis on porcelain manufacturing and trade.  The funding award of $500 will be utilized toward educational lectures presented in New Mexico, specifically toward purchase of Chinese ceramic samples, processing exhibition prints, and travel expenses to Albuquerque and Deming/Silver City.

Located in Santa Fe, Desert Academy will be utilizing the $500 awarded for purchase of an Electro Kiln Sitter.  Having the kiln sitter for a recently donated Olympic kiln will enhance the art program for students in grades 6 – 12  and summer art programs for children in the community.

As part of the revitalization of the El Rito Campus of Northern New Mexico College, the $500 award to El Rito Arts Association will go toward purchasing ceramic studio equipment and supplies for presentation of an August three-day Sustainable Ceramics Workshop at the El Rito Campus.

In the 1990’s, NMPCA established the Armstrong Grant in memory of Bill Armstrong, a member who was instrumental in teaching many people about pottery through sharing, experimenting, learning, and helping others.  Armstrong Grant funds are awarded yearly to New Mexico 501(c)3 organizations and educational institutions for purchasing supplies and equipment, contracting a visiting artist, marketing and publicizing a special program or project, or other activities directly related to ceramic art education.
