Meet the Jurors for Celebration of Clay 2019

The New Mexico Potters and Clay Artists annual exhibition, Celebration of Clay 2019: Many Hands, Many Ways, has a tradition of being a “self-juried” show. This means that member participants select their own best work to display. Show jurors review the exhibited works and select awards for pieces they determine to be of special notice. The awards selected by the award jurors include Best of Show ($150), 3 Awards of Merit ($50) and the Beauty, Quality and Functionality award of the Arita Porcelain Group ($100). There is also a People’s Choice award selected by online and in-gallery viewer votes.

Celebration of Clay 2019: Many Hands, Many Ways

The three jurors to select awards for the 2019 Celebration of Clay are José Sierra, Mark Grischke, and Ann Brown.

José Sierra

José Sierra was born in Mérida, Venezuela in 1975. While José is a self-taught artist, he was introduced to ceramics at the University of the Andes in Mérida, Venezuela from 1993-1996, where he learned the basic skills of mixing clay, glazes, as well as wheel throwing. In 1996, José began working professionally as an artist in Mérida, Venezuela, doing sculpture. In 2000, José moved to Iowa where he dedicated himself to both sculpture and pottery. José currently resides in New Mexico where he is a studio potter.

Mark Grischke

Mark (with his husband, Rod Andres) owns and operates Santa Fe Clay. A former New Yorker, magazine editor and writer, Grischke has been
deeply involved in the intersecting worlds of art, fashion and design for all of his career. As a curator, Grischke says, he’s “always searching for one of two things: the perfect representation of a type (a Platonic ideal) or something my eyes have never seen before.”

Ann Brown

A lifelong resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Ann B. Brown has 38 years of experience addressing the complexities and many dimensions of the art business where she has specialized in late 19th and 20th Century American painting and sculpture. Her career began with Fenn Galleries and spanned many years with Nedra Matteucci Galleries. She has enjoyed working with artists presenting a broad range of media, including ceramics. Her expertise is comprehensive and allows for a broad understanding and valuable perspective of the arts. Ms. Brown currently works as an independent consultant and broker.
