Meet Daisy Kates

DaisyKates2I have been a ceramic artist for over forty-five years. In addition to being a studio artist, I had a long-term career as an educator of ceramic arts in social service settings including 28 years developing and teaching the pottery program for the City of Albuquerque’s Department of Senior Affairs and 10 years teaching at an agency for the blind in NYC. I’ve also fabricated several ceramic public art murals.

In addition, I’ve traveled quite extensively and have volunteered for some international projects in pottery.

For the past few years I have predominantly been creating assemblages that have included paintings with ceramic elements and, most recently, outdoor sculptures with metal, wood and clay components.

Daisey Kates, I was an active member in the NMPotters’ Guild. I worked with Bill Armstrong. I have several of Bill’s pieces. I have about 8 clay plaques made with dried weeds pressed into the clay. They are very stunning. Each is mounted on finished wood with wire hanger. Bill sent them to me while I was in California. He had asked me to get them placed in a gallery. I never did that and have moved these l pieces around for years since his passing.

I am so pleased to see that there is a grant program. I would like to send these pieces to the guild or someone in the NMPotters’ Guild. Hopefully they can be hung as a retrospetive show and sold to fund the grant.
