Richard Garriott Stejskal

Richard Garriott-StejskalAfter a number of years of meaning to rejoin NMPCA, but having successfully put it off, I recently re-activated my membership. I was active in NMPCA serving on the board and as president.

I have lived in Albuquerque since 1968. I worked for 25 years as a creative art therapist at the VA Medical Center and for 2 years with Special Arts New Mexico. I was on the board and president of the Albuquerque Art Business Association. I currently work part time at Home Depot.

I work with clay making sculptures. My work has been shown widely and was featured in an article in Ceramics Monthly. Currently I show at Not Sheep Gallery in Columbus, Ohio and Gallery Piquel in New Hope, PA. I have taught workshops at Santa Fe Clay, College of Santa Fe and the Mendocino Art Center.Richard Garriott-Stejskal

Some years back, possibly twenty, when I was working in NYC, I went into a small gallery on 57th Street. The ambient light was dim. Spots directly aimed down focusing on small sculptures of regal figures. Their effect on me was of seeing crown jewels of ruined souls. I went back to see them twice more. They were the work of Richard Garriott-Stejskal. That show still is a rich part of my memories. (What are we but an accumulation of memories?) I am delighted to know that he is, once again, part of NMPCA.
This candid bio stating his part time work at Home Depot is significant to me both as commentary on our shallow consumer culture and of the powerful internal drive an artist must have to continue to produce. Bravo. Sara Lee D’Alessandro
